Following the successful “25 Years of Match of the Day” series, BBC Video now offers a modern history of famous clubs seen through the programme’s lens since 1964.

When Match of the Day started, Nottingham Forest were a first division side under the guidance of Johnny Carey. Carey’s team included stars like Frank Wignall, Terry Hennessey and the prolific goal-scorer Ian Story-Moore. The “Reds” were runners-up in 1967 and yet by the early 1970s had been relegated to the second division.

The inspired appointment of Brian Clough in 1975 not only saw Forest return to the top flight in 1977 but led to the most sustained period of success in the club’s history.

Forest were champions in 1978 and won successive European Cups in 1979 and 1980. Players like Peter Shilton, Viv Anderson, Gerry Birtles, Tony Woodcock and Britain’s first million pound player Trevor Francis kept the City Ground alive with brilliance.

Forest maintained their strength throughout the ‘80s with only Championship finish outside the top 10 and the capture of the Littlewoods Cup in 1989. The ‘80s saw the emergence of a new era of Forest stars: Des Walker, Steve Hodge, Nigel Clough and Stuart Pearce, and with Clough still at the helm, the club look set for many future honours.

This superb video contains many memorable moments from the history of one of England’s finest clubs.
