Lichen Planus: A Clinical Review

On this installment of my Clinical Review Series, I cover my approach to lichen planus. I discuss lichen planus, a chronic inflammatory condition which can be asymptomatic, can present with symptoms with certain foods like citrus foods or vinaigrettes, or can be symptomatic all the time. I discuss my treatment protocol for those with symptoms. We also discuss the other areas of the body where lichen planus can appear outside of the mouth. I also stress the need for long term follow-up given the potential risk of malignant transformation and discuss some of the warning signs that I take into consideration when biopsying.

I have two main goals for my Clinical Review Series: The first is patient education. I hope that by creating diagnosis-specific videos, patients will have a reliable, evidence-based information so they don’t feel the pressure to remember everything during an appointment. These videos are not meant to be comprehensive reviews of all presentations and epidemiologic and histology findings but rather focus on the clinical implications of these conditions. My second goal is to disseminate knowledge to providers about how one oral pathologist, me, handles certain common entities. These videos will only discuss MY PERSONAL approach to these entities. There are a lot of right ways to approach and treat these conditions. My way isn’t the only right way and isn’t intended to be.
