This week marks the birth anniversary of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, a towering figure in Tamil Nadu’s political and social history. Revered as a freedom fighter, spiritual leader, and social reformer, Thevar’s legacy continues to resonate, with growing demands for him to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. From opposing British colonial rule to uplifting marginalized communities, Thevar’s contributions were remarkable. Inspired by Subhas Chandra Bose, he joined the Forward Bloc in 1939 and became a key leader in Tamil Nadu. He fought against the oppressive Criminal Tribes Act, campaigning tirelessly for the rights and dignity of communities unfairly labeled as criminal. His activism also paved the way for the Temple Entry Authorisation and Indemnity Act, enabling Dalits to enter Hindu temples freely.

Elected three times as an MP, Thevar’s influence extends beyond politics; he remains a symbol of pride for the Mukkulathor community and a unifying figure in southern Tamil Nadu. Today, political parties across the state—AIADMK, DMK, and BJP—pay tribute to his memory, recognizing his enduring impact on elections, community identity, and social justice.
