Description: It's my very little effort to give tribute to the Legend "Sri Gomdhar Konwar"

“Before 1857… before the great uprisings… Assam had already shaken the British empire.”

In 1828, a young Ahom prince named Gomdhar Konwar sparked one of the earliest revolts against British rule in all of India. After the fall of the Ahom Kingdom, when Assam was silently slipping under colonial control, Gomdhar Konwar rose with one bold decision — to restore the Ahom throne.

He crowned himself king, gathered loyal followers, and launched a rebellion that echoed through the valleys of Upper Assam. It wasn’t a huge army… it wasn’t a long battle… but it was the first spark of Assamese resistance.

Even though history doesn’t clearly record his birth date, it records something far greater — his courage.

Gomdhar wasn’t hanged; he was captured and exiled to Calcutta, far from his land. Many of his brave companions were punished, but their spirit became the foundation of Assam’s early freedom struggle.

Today, his revolt stands as the first organized uprising against the British in Assam — long before the rest of India woke up to rebellion.

This isn’t just history.
This is pride.
This is legacy.
This is Gomdhar Konwar — the forgotten king who dared to fight back.
