The first attempt to constitute the municipality of Santa Maria do Pará dates back to 1955 , through Law No. Law No. 2460, of December 29, 1961, created the municipality of Santa Maria do Pará, with territory dismembered from the municipality of Igarapé-Açu . Historian Carlos Rocque, however, states that the municipality of Santa Maria do Pará was integrated with lands from the municipalities of Nova Timboteua , São Miguel do Guamá and Igarapé-Açu . However, they do not exist in the acts that affect the legal circumscription of the municipalities of Nova Timboteua andSão Miguel do Guamá , any references about the dismemberment of its territories to compose Santa Maria do Pará, there is not even evidence about the evolution of the main population nucleus that gave rise to it. It is known, however, that the creation of the municipality of Santa Maria do Pará, as well as that of the other Municipalities in the Salgado Zone , was due to the Bragança Railway , currently extinct. When Augusto Montenegro took over the state government, around 1897, one of the goals of his administration was the completion of the Bragança Railroad and the colonization of the Bragantina Region , which would take advantage of the railroad to transport its products to Belém .🇧🇷 As a result, migrants from other parts of the State and Brazil settled in the region, where they assumed the role of exploiting settlers. Over time, they built some settlements, which achieved significant progress. Currently, the Municipality is formed by the headquarters district of Santa Maria do Pará and District of Taciateua .
