In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Allah! There is no God but He – the Living, The Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him Nor Sleep. All things in heaven and earth are His. Who could intercede in His presence without His permission? He knows what appears in front of and behind His creatures. Nor can they encompass any knowledge of Him except what he wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them, for He is the Highest and Most Exalted.
Allah, the Most High, speaks the truth.
The great and blessed month of Allah, Muharram, is the first month of the Islamic year (Hijri calendar). It is one of the sacred months concerning which Allah (May He be praised and exalted) says:
“Surely, the number of months according to Allah is twelve (as written) in the Book of Allah on the day He created the heavens and the Earth, of which there are Four Sacred Months. That is the right faith. So, do not wrong yourself therein.”
[Surat at-Tawbah 9:36].
It was narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet ﷺ “…the year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three consecutive months, Dhu al-Qa‘dah, Dhu al-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab of Mudar which comes between Jumaada and Sha‘baan.”
(Bukhari)
Scholars such as Ibn Rajab have mentioned it is the best month of the year after Ramadan.
Muharram is called so because it is a sacred month; this further emphasizes its sanctity.
The words of Allah (May He be praised and exalted): “So, do not wrong yourself therein” mean: do not wrong yourselves in these sacred months, because doing so is a greater sin than at other times.
It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said, concerning the words of Allah “So, do not wrong yourself therein”: (The command not to wrong yourself) applies in all months, then Allah singled out four months and made them sacred, and emphasised their sanctity, and He made sins during these months more grave, and He made righteous deeds and reward thereof greater.
Qataadah (may Allah have mercy upon him) said, concerning the words “So, do not wrong yourself therein”: Wrongdoing during the sacred months is more serious and incurs a greater burden of sin than in other months. Wrongdoing is a serious matter in any circumstance, but Allah makes whatever He wills of His commands carry more weight.
He said: Allah has chosen elites from His creation: from among the angels He chose Messengers, from among mankind He chose Messengers, from among the speech He chose remembrance of Him (dhikr), from among spaces on earth He chose the mosques, from among the months He chose Ramadan and the sacred months, from among the days He chose Friday (Jumu‘ah), and from among nights He chose Laylat al-Qadr. So venerate that which has been chosen by Allah, for people of understanding and wisdom respect that which has been chosen by Allah.
