From Trolls to Triumph: The Unstoppable Rise of the Nooran Sisters

The Nooran Sisters, Jyoti and Sultana, once faced ridicule and trolls on social media for their powerful, "aggressive" singing style and high-pitched vocals. However, music lovers have long associated their name with beloved songs. Even those unfamiliar with the duo likely know their hit song, "Patakha Guddi," from the A.R. Rahman musical for the Bollywood film Highway. This very song earned them the Mirchi Music Awards for Upcoming Female Vocalist of the Year and Vocalist of the Year in 2014. More recently, Jyoti Nooran has won over even the Malayali audiences who once trolled her, earning applause for the power-packed promo song "Thaniloka Murakkaari" for the film Loka, considered Indian cinema's first female superhero movie.

Hailing from a family with a rich Sufi tradition in Punjab, Jyoti and Sultana were introduced to music by their grandmother, Bibi Nooran, a renowned Sufi singer from the 1970s. Their father, Ustad Gulshan Mir, recognized their talent when they were just seven and five years old and personally trained them in music. Their journey gained momentum after their first TV appearance in 2005 and they were brought to global attention by music promoter Iqbal Mahal in 2010. Their performance of "Tung Tung" on MTV's Sound Trippin' in 2012 became a massive hit, blending Punjabi folk with modern beats. This success was followed by another smash hit, "Allah Hoo," on Coke Studio, which led to their big break with A.R. Rahman for Highway. Since then, the Nooran Sisters have become sought-after artists, lending their voices to numerous Bollywood films and releasing their own album, with their music even being remixed by international artists. They have also made a significant mark in South Indian cinema, singing hit songs in Tamil and Telugu before their latest successful venture into Malayalam.
