The Black woodpecker is a large woodpecker that lives in mature forests across Europe and Asia. They are the largest woodpeckers in Europe and one of the largest in the world. This crow-sized bird is fully black with the exception of a bright red crown. It has piercing yellow eyes and makes manic calls that are easily recognised. The two calls it makes are a series of kree-kree-kree sounds and a longer screech-like shrill during flight.
