So what gets cited? If you have an article, of course, then what you want is to reach, not simply the authors of the article, that they will read it, but also the audience. Right? But the the authors and the article is exactly what then get cited. And it can get cited by being highlighted in new manuscript, it can get cited by being referred to videos or to podcast.
There are many different way of getting citation. Even through social media, that are very useful even to increase the visibility of what we do. And nowadays, I will as we will see at the end of this presentation, there are many journals that refer and articles in social media, to increase even their visibility, of the publisher itself. So therefore, the articles, sites the authors, but then the authors can also cite the articles in their, future research. And this what is the impact of all this?
This is extremely important because the impact is for peers, to read the our articles and decide which is the direction they want to take for our research or which is the experiment that they also need to perform in their settings, but that they might rely on protocols that are published or even they might want to collaborate with you, right, to perform a specific, aims of their research. But it's very important that, we understand that that our articles can also be cited by the civil society, meaning the public, because there is this need to promote, a a closure a close approximation of civil society to the science that we do to better understand this sometimes where, the money that comes from taxpayers is invested, but also to policymakers. And I cannot stress enough how important is science for policymakers because, indeed, they needed to base their decision on data. And who provides data? We provide data.
Okay? So this is the for the wider audience that can cite our paper and then get cited, as well. So and all this loop allows that, if you have, a good quality of your work, then you have more chances to ensure that all these, you know, interaction, continues and, are being then emphasized. But you might also have a very, nice impact and interested impact to society and therefore promote even outreaches activities or community based work, and you engage more with a wider audience. So whenever, for instance, your paper is explained to new students, you might really get the sense of whether those new student might be even interested in working with you.
So it also serves to pass the testimony to someone else, allowing that the field of research to continue.
