This course will explore Second Temple texts that address the development of early Jewish practice and identity prior to the rabbinic era. In particular, we will analyze Jewish literature that addresses the subjects of charity-giving, prayer, Shabbat, holiday observance, and other practices that were definitional to Jewish identity during this era.
