In today’s episode, I’m excited to share the progress on the next planting terrace and walk through a major lesson I’ve learned about soil prep in the desert. This latest planting area is getting fully prepped with organic material like horse manure, straw, and soon, biochar and vermiculite to increase water retention.

Experience has shown me that thorough soil preparation makes a huge difference in this arid landscape, helping plants root and survive with less water.

I’ll also take you through some setbacks on the previous terrace where poor amendment led to patchy growth. To address this, I’m using clay seed balls, which will retain water for better germination, along with adjusting irrigation to ensure seeds are positioned near the water source.

And on the adventurous side, we had two close encounters with rattlesnakes, relocating them safely to continue our work on the ranch. Stick around to see the changes we’re making to keep this desert forest project moving forward, one step at a time.
