STORYLINE
Japanese troops on Tuesday continued their withdrawal from Iraq.
A convoy of about eight Japanese trucks carrying various military vehicles was seen driving on the Safwan highway, south of Baghdad, heading to Kuwait.
The withdrawal began on Sunday when a Japanese military contingent crossed the border from southern Iraq into Kuwait.
Japan had deployed 600 soldiers to conduct a humanitarian mission in the southern Iraqi city of Samawah.
The mission started in 2004.
The troops' actions were limited to humanitarian support under Japan's postwar pacifist constitution.
In Iraq, they purified water, repaired schools, patched roads and strengthened medical services.
Despite concerns about the troops' safety, the area where were based was relatively peaceful and the contingent did not suffer any casualties.
