Europe’s largest black market turtle farm raided -- bootleg turtles worth $12,000 each

Crooks go wherever there is money to be made, even turtle farming. Spanish police raided Europe’s largest illegal turtle farm on Aug. 23, 2018, seizing 1,100 turtles and 750 eggs, although the catch is expected to grow imminently as more than 200 females were about to lay eggs. Among the species found on the farm on the Balearic Islands, a popular holiday destination off the south coast of Spain were 14 of the 50 most endangered turtle species in the world, some originating from Canada, Mexico and the United States and protected by respective national legislation. There were also turtles from South Asia considered at high risk of extinction, as well as black turtles, listed as “vulnerable” in Spain. The total value of this reptiles and eggs is worth about EUR 600, 000 (about US$700,000), with some turtles worth EUR 10,000 each (about US$12,000).
