Albemarle Sound & Alligator River - MM 66.2 to MM 105.0
This is the transition from open water into the protected, mostly straight Alligator River and the canal entrance.

Albemarle Sound Crossing - MM 66.2 to MM 80
The passage across the sound is marked by lights and covers about 12.7 miles to the entrance of the Alligator River. The sound can be uncomfortable or dangerous for open boats in heavy weather, and there are few places to anchor in the sound itself.

Alligator River - MM 80 to MM 105.0
The ICW route continues through the dredged channel of the Alligator River, which is approximately 20 miles long.

Bridges and Construction Hazards
The Lindsay C. Warren Bridge, a US 64 Swing Bridge at MM 84.2, has a swing span with 14 feet vertical clearance.

Crucial warning: It may not open if wind speed is over 34 knots. The bridgetender monitors VHF Channels 16 and 13. They will ask your registration number

US 64 Bridge Construction at MM 83.5 involves replacement construction underway from February 14, 2025, through November 30, 2029, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new bridge will be a fixed span, high-rise structure. Mariners must use extreme caution when navigating the area.

Anchorage Spots - MM 83 to MM 104
These locations are often used to wait for the bridge or prepare for the canal.

Little Alligator River at MM 83.0 provides general shelter. Anchor near the mouth or past the first bend.

Bridge Delay Anchorage near MM 84.2 offers good holding and depth. Anchor on the east side, off the creek, just north of the bridge, especially if high winds prevent the bridge opening.

Deep Point at MM 102.0 has about 7 feet depth with decent shelter and holding. Often used by tugs and pleasure craft.

Bear Point at MM 103.0 provides good northerly protection. Anchor north of R46, far enough from the ICW to avoid wakes.

Tuckahoe Point at MM 104.0 offers 7 to 10 feet depth with excellent holding. Located at the northern entrance to the Alligator-Pungo Canal, anchor on the north shore for the best breeze and fewer bugs.

Alligator River South End near MM 104 provides 7 to 8 feet depth with excellent protection. Near the canal entrance, it's peaceful with minimal bugs on the north shore.

Destination: Alligator River–Pungo River Canal - MM 105.0

This segment ends at the entrance to the Alligator River–Pungo River Canal. This 21-mile land cut is notoriously challenging due to debris and snags, and midchannel navigation is recommended.
