In this video, Don Jones covers formatting in PowerShell. PowerShell boasts a rich and incredibly useful formatting system. With it, you can get results in a neat, organized and easy-to-read display. But Don demonstrates that it also contains one of the biggest gotchas in PowerShell.

Piping PowerShell's many functions into "format-list" or "format-wide" can display your information in lists, into tables, or with only the information you're looking for. It's a fast, powerful way to view only the data you need in the way you need it.

Watch and see many different ways to output combinations of width, defaults, settings, properties and requests. And on top of all of that, you can also send the data to a file. Using out-file, out-printer and out-string mean you can view your PowerShell data and then print it off too.

But here's the biggest gotcha in PowerShell: whenever you use a format command, what that produces is actually a bunch of PowerShell internal formatting data. So after you've used a format command, you can't do anything except output it.

In other words, if you're going to format and you want to out-file it, make sure your formatting appears at the end of your entire command.
