Earth's water likely came from multiple sources over millions of years. Scientists believe it originated from a combination of the following:

Primordial Earth Release – When Earth formed about 4.5 billion years ago, it was extremely hot. As it cooled, water vapor trapped inside minerals and molten rock was released through volcanic activity. This contributed to the formation of early oceans.

Asteroids and Comets – Many water-rich asteroids and comets bombarded Earth during the Late Heavy Bombardment (around 4.1–3.8 billion years ago). These celestial bodies carried ice, which vaporized and later condensed to form liquid water.

Solar Nebula Influence – Some scientists suggest that hydrogen from the solar nebula (the gas and dust surrounding the young Sun) combined with oxygen on Earth to form water.

Studies of water's isotopic composition suggest that asteroids, rather than comets, were the primary source. However, the exact proportions from each source are still debated.
