STORYLINE:

The first civil union between a gay couple in Latin America took place on Friday in Argentinian capital, Buenos Aires.

Cesar Cigliutti, 45, and Marcelo Suntheim, 35, members of the Argentinian Gay Community (CHA), had been fighting for more than two years to be legally wed - the law entitling such unions was approved by the Buenos Aires legislature last week.

Hundreds of members of the gay and lesbian community, as well as curious passers by, attended the ceremony in a small room of the city's main civil office.

Legislation for civil unions between homosexual and heterosexual couples came as a result of a long fight from humanitarian associations that first got the law approved in the capital city.

Some provinces in Argentina are also aiming for the civil union laws and politicians say that this will trigger more liberal legislation not only in Argentina but also in the rest of Latin America.
