Some how a random steel ball bearing has got into the gearbox and jammed up the impact hammer on the shaft. With the iimpact hammer not ingaged the anvil is free to rotate on its own.

These dewalt impact guns are generaly very good and give very little trouble. They are buy no means the most powerful impact on the market, but they are one of the most durable. Motors very rarely give any problems and only seem to stop running after several years of hard abuse.
