E. Paul Guenette [cinematographer] shot the film in super 16 format; a moving Rembrandt in crushed charcoal, with daringly minimal splashes of light on faces, surrounded by a cloak of black.
Over a decade ago in Vancouver, B.C. , Brian McGugan opened his credit card statement and saw charges for a movie, his new pair of Nike's and gas for his Jeep. While these charges wouldn't seem unusual to most people, the movie on McGugan's bill was one that he directed, produced and starred in -- financed by his VISA card.

And it ain't no home video, neither. Bravo! NewStyle Arts Channel of Toronto (Citytv) liked Motifs and Repetitions so much that they purchased the rights to broadcast the film [1997- 2002], including one year [1997] as the exclusive Canadian presenter. Subsequently, Knowledge Network of B.C. licensed the short film in 1998.

"I was tired of filling out grant applications and biting my nails waiting to find out if a stranger thought my ideas were worthy of financing. The satisfaction I have from making Motifs and Repetitions on my time lines without creative compromise far outweighs having a maxed-out card for a while," says McGugan.

Motifs and Repetitions is produced and directed by Brian McGugan, from the award winning stage play by C. E. Gatchalian. The film's about 3 people: motivated by fear and jealousy, they all deceive and manipulate one another into emotional oblivion, but in an upbeat sort of way.
