This visualization begins with the Homunculus Nebula, home to the massive binary star system Eta Carinae, as observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. The view then pulls back to reveal the larger Carina Nebula, a vast and relatively nearby star-forming region in the southern sky.

The visualization demonstrates how the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will observe a much wider area than Hubble, covering more of the Carina Nebula in fewer pointings. By repeatedly observing this region over time, Roman will allow astronomers to detect changes and better understand how stars form, evolve, and interact with their surroundings.

The Carina Nebula and its environment — including a 10,000 light-year-long section of the Milky Way’s spiral arm — are part of the Roman Galactic Plane Survey, which will map 691 square degrees of the sky over a two-year period. This survey will provide an unprecedented view of star formation and the structure of our galaxy.
