Some believe the fantasy genre isn’t good for children to read because it doesn’t deal with real-world problems; or that it gives children a false sense of reality. They opt instead for “realistic” books. While realistic stories give the impression of presenting ordinary life, these stories can provide just as false a sense of reality as books about wizards and elves. One of the core tenets of the Christian worldview is that there is “something else” (God) beyond the material world. Reading fantasy reveals to us our innate spiritual longing for this “something else” outside of ourselves, while realistic stories can keep us focused solely on ourselves.
