Ramakkalmedu and the legend of Kuravan Kurathi Malai (or Kuravanmala and Kurathimala) are deeply connected and form one of Idukki's most unique attractions.
⛰️ Ramakkalmedu: The Wind-Kissed Hill of Legends
Ramakkalmedu is a picturesque hill station in the Idukki district, renowned for its panoramic views and continuous, strong winds, making it one of Asia's windiest places.
Meaning & Legend: The name translates to "Land where Lord Rama kept his foot" (Rama-kal-medu). According to local mythology, Lord Rama, the hero of the Ramayana, stood on this hill searching for his abducted wife, Sita.
Views: It offers breathtaking, sweeping panoramic views of the lush green Western Ghats and the plains and villages of the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu (like Cumbum, Theni, etc.). The view at dusk, with the lights of the Tamil Nadu towns twinkling below, is particularly spectacular.
Unique Feature: Due to the constant wind (sometimes reaching up to 35 km/h), it is also home to one of Kerala's wind energy farms, with large windmills dotting the landscape.
Statue Location: The iconic Kuravan and Kurathi statue is a prominent landmark situated on the Ramakkalmedu hilltop.
🗿 Kuravan Kurathi Malai: A Tale of Eternal Love and the Dam
The legend of Kuravan and Kurathi is associated with both a famous statue on Ramakkalmedu and the massive Idukki Arch Dam.
1. The Statue on Ramakkalmedu
A massive, iconic twin statue of a tribal couple, Kuravan and Kurathi, stands proudly on the Ramakkalmedu hilltop.
The 40-foot-tall sculpture, created by artist C.B. Jinan, is a tribute to the indigenous people of the region and symbolizes the connection between the land and its original inhabitants.
2. The Hills and the Idukki Dam
Kuravanmala (Kuravan's Hill) and Kurathimala (Kurathi's Hill) are the two massive, opposing rock hills in Idukki between which the Periyar River flowed through a narrow gorge.
The world-famous Idukki Arch Dam was constructed by connecting these two hills, thereby uniting them.
