Here, we have one of the rarer Mustangs, built-in 1966. One might suggest that the name survivor could describe this time-warp vehicle.
This Mustang was built at the San Jose Ford Factory in California on the 16th of December and then delivered to "Ralph Williams Ford", located at Ventura Boulevard Encino, California.
The GT was then spotted by Mr Robert Lewis of 15436 Vanowen Van Nuys, California, the dealership was approximately 8 mins away from his home. He then purchased it and took delivery on the 23rd of January 1966. I have tried to outline the differences this example has as opposed to a "would be" GT. We still have his original Mustang handbook with this car.
This GT has the original features that came with the car.
External clues
Petrol Cap "GT"
Exhaust trumpet tips exit through the rear panel, not underneath.
Lower stripes with Mustang chrome lettering
GT Badge on front wings
GT Fog light bar and lights in the front grille.
Under the bonnet clues.
A or K code engine , which is the 5th digit of the vin number , located on the inner wing.
Bigger sway bar 13/16 diameter
Fog light wiring holes, which have a inward lip.
Four barrel carburettor.
Large round master cylinder with a clip on the top (for the disc brakes)
Interior Clues.
GT exhaust hanger bolt with reinforcement plate under rear seat. This has to be done at the factory and is in my opinion the best clue of all.
Fog light switch, left hand side under dash , chrome.
Disc brake pedal.
Gt gauge cluster.
Undercarriage clues.
Dual Exhaust
GT dual exhaust hanger bracket mounts on the rear floor pan and the reinforcements in the rear frame rails, for the exhausts .
Some of these extras listed above can be added to an ordinary coupe, but some can not especially the hanger bolts etc.
The last owner had some paintwork restoration performed as the Wimbledon white colour had gone very thin and faded. However, it now looks very bright and presents well. It still sits on its original 14 inch Rally style steel wheels with the beauty rings. The interior is in great shape. In the driver's seat, holding onto the original steering wheel, one can see the factory rally pack and the GT 5 gauge dash pod. The seats and headlining are all good; the only real evidence of the age is the slight discolouration of the original carpet; however, it still gives that survivor look. (easily replaced if preferred).
We have left under the bonnet as original, showing how well it has been preserved over its 59 years. It even still has its factory Californian smog attachment fitted. We have left the engine bay as we purchased it, because we are finding more clients who prefer the opportunity to purchase a survivor car and use it as such.
Here at Pilgrim V8, we have the body shop and the Mustang workshops to make this Original GT a show car by removing the engine and repainting the bay, engine, and ancillary parts to make it look like a new one. However, we would have to charge extra for this. You will see a photo of another car we have done in the photographs package.
This Mustang has power steering, front disc brakes, automatic transmission and centre console, making it an excellent choice for the trip to Le Mans Classic or the local classic car show. How many prizes would it win in the survivor class?
Finding a real GT Coupe in this condition is rare nowadays especially within the UK and Europe, and this solid example at this price could be a good investment, especially with no capital gains tax on classic cars!
