There is increasing interest in how "blue carbon" ecosystems such as mangroves can help mitigate global climate change due to their high rates of carbon sequestration and storage. This presentation introduces the concept of blue carbon, and highlights stocks, sequestration and emissions in Southeast Asia. The region is a global hotspot for mangrove blue carbon, but is also a hotspot for deforestation. Land use drivers such as aquaculture and rice have differential impacts on carbon emissions. Mangrove restoration can increase blue carbon storage and sequestration, and mangrove carbon credit projects can be financially viable and more efficient than terrestrial carbon credit projects. Blue carbon is important even in fragmented mangroves, and Singapore provides a great example of how to measure, conserve and restore blue carbon along a complex urban coastline.
