It's a tough, in-your-face image. Nowadays, you know, people who collect contemporary art, people who collect, you know, modern art would react to a picture like this. And this certainly has been in a collection previously where that was the case."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Apostle, Sotheby's:
"You know, having been through a lot of these ups and downs and, you know, in my 30-some years, I always find the great works of art always find a home, always find an audience. We've just been through COVID. We saw very strong prices during that. I think, you know, when people are maybe a little unsure, you know, buying a great work of art and hanging it on your wall, you know where it is. You know it's not going anywhere, like maybe a stock or a bond might."

STORYLINE:
Sotheby's auction house unveiled what it is describing as "one of the greatest collections of old masters paintings" in recent memory in New York on Tuesday.
The star of the show is Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Salome presented with the severed head of Saint John the Baptist.
Sotheby's Christopher Apostle said that there was a time that a painting of a severed head would have been a more difficult sell, but that today the gruesome subject actually helps bring in buyers who are not exclusively old masters collectors.
"It's a tough, in-your-face image. Nowadays, you know, people like contemporary art, people who collect, you know, modern art would react to a picture like this. And this certainly has been on a collection previously where that was the case," said Apostle.
The Rubens' painting is expected to fetch $25,000,000 – $35,000,000.
The 2023 Old Masters Auction will also include works by Orazio Gentilleschi, Guercino, Valentin de Bourgogne, Bernardo Cavallino, Georges de la Tour & others
