STORYLINE:
With Cyclone Biparjoy expected to make landfall Thursday evening, coastal regions of India and Pakistan are on high alert.

At one relief camp for displaced people in Gharo, a village in Pakistan, 80-year-old Bayan Bibi said that local administration evacuated them from their coastal town in Thatta and they were facing problems at the camp with not enough medicine.

In Pakistan, despite strong winds and rain, authorities said people from vulnerable areas have been moved to safer places in southern Pakistan’s districts, including Thatta, Keti Bandar, Sajawal and Badin. These regions were affected by the devastating floods that displaced thousands of people last year.

For many people living in these districts, it was the second displacement.

Journalists with The Associated Press witnessed people placing belongings into vehicles and leaving their homes and family members either voluntarily or because of authorities forcing them to move to makeshift relief camps, which have been established at government buildings and schools.

Allah Noor, 59, a daily wage laborer in the relief camp said, they were evacuated by troops amid a strong windstorm and are now waiting for the situation to improve so that they can return to their homes safely.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif the previous day ordered authorities that all those at risk should be evacuated from the coastal towns and districts as quickly as possible.
