In today’s digital age, screen time has become almost unavoidable. While it brings many benefits, excessive and improper use—especially among children—can negatively affect not just their eye health, but also their physical development and social interaction.

Children’s eyes are still in their developmental stages, making them more vulnerable to the effects of prolonged screen exposure. According to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics:

Children under 2 years: No screen time is recommended.
Children aged 2–5 years: Limit screen time to a maximum of 1 hour per day.
Children above 5 years: Should not exceed 2 hours of screen time per day.

To safeguard your child’s vision:

Keep screen time to a minimum.
Encourage the use of distant screens (like TVs) over handheld devices.
Ensure proper lighting in the room.
Remind children to blink regularly and take frequent breaks.
Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Maintain good posture while using screens.

For younger children, it’s best to actively discourage screen use. Instead, foster healthy habits by engaging them in activities like personal interaction, storytelling, arts and crafts, and physical play. These not only reduce the risk of eye strain but also promote emotional well-being and strengthen family bonds.
