Ingredients:

Dal Khichdi is a comforting and easy-to-make Indian dish made from rice and lentils. Here’s a detailed recipe to make a flavorful Dal Khichdi using basmati rice.


Ingredients
For Dal and Rice Mixture:

1 cup basmati rice
½ cup moong dal (yellow lentils)
½ cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
5 cups water
For Tempering:

2 tbsp ghee or oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 green chili, chopped
1-inch ginger, finely chopped
1 tomato, finely chopped
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp red chili powder (optional, adjust to taste)
Salt, to taste
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Prep the Rice and Lentils

Rinse the basmati rice, moong dal, and toor dal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Soak them together for 20 minutes in water.
Cook the Rice and Dal

In a pressure cooker, add the soaked rice and dal mixture along with 5 cups of water.
Pressure cook for 4–5 whistles (about 10–12 minutes on medium heat) or until the rice and dal are completely cooked and soft. The mixture should be mushy.
Once done, carefully release the pressure and check the consistency. Add more water if needed to adjust the thickness to your preference.
Prepare the Tempering

In a pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat.
Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add chopped onions, green chili, and ginger. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and red chili powder. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and the oil begins to separate from the mixture.
Combine and Adjust Consistency

Pour the tempering mixture into the cooked rice and dal in the pressure cooker. Mix well.
Add salt to taste and more water if needed to reach your desired consistency. Simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors.
Serve

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
Serve hot with papad, pickle, or a dollop of ghee on top for extra flavor.
