Can DRDO deliver a home grown effective counter measure systems against the killer drones? What are the capabilities of DRDO's anti-drone system?

Before we begin further discussion on DRDO's capability, lets first try to understand the recent statement from DRDO's chief G Satheesh Reddy. As per his statement on Tuesday, the counter-drone technology developed by DRDO could provide the armed forces with the capability to swiftly detect, intercept and destroy small drones that pose a security threat.

He said DRDO’s anti-drone system would give the military both “soft kill” and “hard kill” options to tackle the new and fast-emerging aerial threat. One thing that is important to understand is that soft kill refers to jamming the hostile drones i.e. breaking the communication link between the drone and its operator. The Hard Kill refers to shooting down of drones using laser or standard combat rifles.

Now, lets try to understand in detail about the DRDO's anti-drone system.

The main part of any surveillance system is going to be its RADAR. DRDO's anti-drone system has a Radar which offers 360 degree coverage from the drone attack. DRDO's anti-drone

system has wide spectrum for the detection of drones. It can detect the micro drones from a distance of 4KM. It also features an electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensors for detection of micro drones up to 2 km and a radio frequency (RF) detector to detect RF communication up to 3 km.

Talking about its soft kill capability, It uses a RF/Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) jammer, which can detect the frequency being used by the operator of the drone and jam its signals from a distance of 3 km.

It incorporates a laser-based hard kill system that can neutralize micro drones at distances between 150 m to 1 km. Both the systems are integrated via a command & control post.

Once a drone is detected by its radar the information is shared to the soft kill and hard kill systems for further tracking after the due verification by a sensor. Once confirmed by

RF detection and verified by EO/IR sensor, the system is ready to jam RF/GNSS signals or use laser weapon as per standard operating procedures.

The prototypes for one vehicle-based and one ground-based set up have been prepared and evaluated by DRDO.

It has also transferred the technology for the production of the anti-drone system to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), and written letters to the Indian Armed forces informing

them about the system's capabilities, as reported by Hindustan Times on Tuesday.

DRDO is even ready to transfer technology to private companies to produce the anti-drone system. In summary we can say that DRDO's anti-drone system is ready for production and deployment, however its the shortsightedness of our defense policy makers that they did not focused on deploying this technology to protect critical assets again the drone attacks.

So, as far as DRDO's capability is concerned no questions about it the anti-drone system is ready. However, many of you might question if this system is proven and effective.

The answer is yes and its has been tested and deployed on multiple occasions. Let me give you few examples:

DRDO had demonstrated its counter-drone technology to different security agencies at the Hindon air force station in January 2020 and at the National Security Guard (NSG) campus in

Manesar in August 2020 and January 2021.

The DRDO's anti-drone system was first deployed to provide security cover to the Republic Day Parade this year which was attended by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with other dignitaries. It was deployed near the Red Fort on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day. The system was again deployed in Ahmedabad for the Modi-Trump roadshow where they were tasked to thwart any aerial threat from drones.
