We visited the headquarters and showroom of Gofun Nail Polish in Kyoto, Japan! Gofun nail polishes are non-toxic and water-based. They are formulated based upon hundreds of years of making traditional Japanese paints. The parent company UEBA ESOU was founded as a paint maker 270 years ago!

One of the ingredients in the traditional white paint used to paint temples is called "gofun". Gofun is made by sun-bleaching scallop shells for ten years and then grinding them into a fine powder. This white powder is also used as a pigment in Gofun water-based nail polish. I love how they took a long tradition and turned it into something new!

I have already tested pretty much all of the water-based nail polishes made in the USA and Canada, and now I get to try Gofun nail polish, which is made in Japan! After switching to water-based nail paint 6-years-ago, I never want to go back to conventional toxic smelling nail polish. With water-based nail polishes, you can barely even smell the polish while painting your nails! It's a great option for those with chemical sensitivities, pregnant women, or anyone who wants to avoid toxins!
