Smitalay is a dance school that primarily teaches Odissi. Every year Smitalay holds a festival for young dancers, in memory of Odissi doyenne Sanjukta Panigrahi, on her birthday 24th August. We started this in 2004, when she would have turned 60. The year 2019 she would have turned 75. The festival celebrating her 75th birthday was unique. It was not a youth festival. Seniors and juniors danced her favorite items. Her contemporary Kumkum Mohanty was invited to dance and speak about Sanjunani (as we called her) and her experiences while setting up the Odissi research centre. This is the first part of the talk.
