The Nonprofit Hiring Ex-Gang Members to Stop Street Crime

Описание к видео The Nonprofit Hiring Ex-Gang Members to Stop Street Crime

Alex Diaz, a former gang member in Boston, is trying to recruit members to a program called Boston Uncornered.

The program is designed to break the cycles of poverty and violence that trap gang-involved youth by identifying their unique gifts and converting them into valued skills via customized academic, financial, and emotional support. It isn’t just about getting young people off of street corners, but putting them on sustainable, individualized paths toward fulfilling lives.

If you want to start your own business, invest, attend college, or a trade school, they hook you up. It’s a pitch, really, not too far afield from the kind that got Alex into gang life to begin with — resources, support, community, promise.

And it is in fact this close proximity of its staff to the problem that has enabled Boston Uncornered to achieve such a high success rate, reducing crime in their neighborhoods by 75%.
