Zespri, the pride of New Zealand horticulture, just admitted something that should concern every consumer and grower.

Under the Government’s new Gene Tech Bill, Zespri is looking to move its natural kiwifruit breeding programme into gene editing.

Presenting their oral submission at the Health Select Committee, they claimed this wasn’t genetic modification, and non-GMO.

That’s incredibly misleading, as any well-informed consumer knows the difference…

Gene editing is GMO. Just a different technique. Genes are modified. The risks remain.

This move fits into a global biotech push to deregulate GE / GMOs - removing safety checks, redefining what “GMO” means, and scrapping labelling rules so you won’t even know what you’re eating.

But there’s a twist….

European Courts have made it clear - “gene editing” is genetic modification, and it must be tested and labelled in the EU.

So while Zespri could sell unlabelled gene-edited kiwifruit here in New Zealand under the gene tech bill… they’d be required to label it as GMO in Europe.

Shouldn’t Kiwis have the same right to know what’s in our food as Europeans do? 🥝
