"Dineo" is one of the first tunes I learned from Mark Campbell and makes a fine introduction to some of the basics of old time fiddling. This particular version comes from Franklin County, Virginia where it is sometimes also known as "Darneo." With variations known across the South under different names, it is one of the most widespread fiddle tunes and presumably fairly old. It was famously recorded by Uncle Dave Macon as "Sail Away Ladies" and is closely related to the popular Galax/Round Peak area tune "Sally Ann" as well as the play party song "Tideo." The tune and song are strongly associated with and considered to derive from African American tradition in Virginia and North Carolina.
