MAGNOLIA's NOTE:
My mother, Cherry Blossom Kim Le, initially wrote the poem "Nàng" in mid-1990's in dedication to her oldest cousin Lac Le. Auntie Lac Le loved this poem so much that her children had it engraved on her gravestone after she passed away in Toronto, Canada.
Upon reciting "Nàng" at the wedding of one of Auntie Lac's sons I told my mother that it is indeed a poetic depiction of herself and all my fair maternal aunties from the Le family - Lac, Phuong, Nga, Hoa, Dung Le. My mother was very pleased with my comments that she'd hand-written the poem onto pretty floweral papers and sent to her beloved sisters and cousins - the Le daughters from Son-Tay, a town suburban of Hanoi.
Later during the Covid pandemic years I transposed this poem into songs of same title "Nàng" meaning "She" or more precisely meaning a refined, respectable lady in the context of Vietnamese culture.
Today Aug. 22, 2025, in memory of my beloved Auntie Phuong Le who recently passed away in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada at age 92, I’d like to share these songs with all family members and friends far and near.
This is just a small gesture for me to express my gratitude and admiration to my Late Auntie Lac, Late Auntie Phuong, my mother and Auntie Nga who devoted their whole life doing many good deeds for family and community.
Below are lyrics of my songs if you like to sing along.
"She" is a long poem so I did split the verses into 2 separate songs.
SONG LYRICS
SHE - Part 1: DAUGHTER of Sơn Tây
She's daughter of Sơn Tây, the Mountain West
Native of Sen Chiểu, Bright Lotus Village
Master Pagodas nearby
Village scenery is from a fairy tale
Like her, the sweet maiden,
Fair like ivory, pure like jade
People often called her beauty
Her presence permeates the sky
With fragrance and colors of spring
Her smile, beautiful like a flower
Her voice, the chirping sounds of a goldfinch
She often shares thoughts,
as noble as orchids and tuberose
Once married, with virtuous devotion and warmth
Her smart ways bring peace and prosperity to her own clan
Oh, she's the daughter of Sơn Tây
The daughter of Sơn Tây, the Mountain West
SHE Part 2: FLOWN WITH THE WIND
One day tumultuous event suddenly came
Like birds flown with the wind
She and her people left home for far distant lands.
They arrived in Canada and America,
With blessings from Lord of Heavens
They are all united in peace and contentment.
Oh, she's my shining mirror to reflect on
Her love is reminiscent of bright moon
Hanging over mountain peak.
Birds sing joyously on nearby branch
In the pond, though a lotus is broken from stem
Its thread still holding on
Melancholy comes to me like raindrops on the roof
As I look toward motherland
Alas, transient life has changed
Like the sea that turned into fields of mulberries,
The wind, ephemeral in all directions,
And clouds seem wandering endlessly.
