Crack propagation sensors will detect, monitor and report on cracks in metallic objects.

Scanimetrics crack sensor system is a wireless, electronic system used for the detection of crack propagation in metallic objects. Figure 1 below shows the basic components of the crack sensor system. The sensors are spot welded in place (or bonded to the surface with epoxy) and then typically covered with special materials to protect the electronics from the harsh environments found in the oil and gas industries during Canadian winters. Once in place, the data from the crack sensors are monitored electronically and stored in an on-board memory chip. Data log files from these electronic devices (called motes) can then be transmitted via a 900MHz wireless connection to a PC or via a cellular modem module to a web server.

Crack propagation can now be monitored electronically (without requiring constant visual inspections) and condition based maintenance practices can be used to determine when repairs actually need to be done in order to avoid catastrophic failure on each of the components being monitored.
