President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leads the opening ceremony of the 2024 National Peace Consciousness Month (NPCM) and commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the 1996 Final Peace Agreement (FPA) with the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) at the Ceremonial Hall in Malacañan Palace on September 2, 2024.

Spearheaded by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), this year’s event carries the theme, ‘Peace Month 20: Bagong Pilipinas - Transforming Minds, Transforming Lives.’ This monthlong event underscores the government’s commitment to transformation which includes ongoing efforts to bring positive change to the lives of former combatants, their families and communities in the implementation of all signed peace agreements.

The Chief Executive also commemorates the 1996 Final Peace Agreement, known as the ‘Jakarta Accord,’ between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). This pivotal achievement ended decades of conflict, established the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), laid the groundwork for future peace negotiations, promoted economic development, enhanced national stability and recognized the cultural identity of the Moro people.

Last month, OPAPRU completed the socioeconomic profiling of an additional 161 MNLF combatants in Marawi City as part of the MNLF Transformation Program, where each combatant received PhP45,000 and food assistance. So far, 1,705 combatants have participated in the cross-cutting initiative, highlighting the importance of MNLF cooperation for lasting peace and progress supported by various government agencies.

This month also celebrates other peace milestones such as the 1986 Sipat Agreement with the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army (CPLA), creation of the National Unification Commission in 1992 and the subsequent founding of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) in 1993, and the United Nations Day of Peace celebrated on September 21.
