A playthrough of Taito's 1991 beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, Thunder Fox.

Played through on normal lt difficulty level as Fox.

Thunder Fox was a popular beat 'em up style coin-op from Taito released in 1990. It cast you in the role of Thunder or Fox (big surprise there) as a member of an anti-terrorist unit saving people "X" from stuff "Y". It's a pretty typical setup.

Thunder Fox plays entirely on a 2D plane and feels a lot like Rush'n Attack or The Ninja Warriors. You get a jump button, and punch button, and a weapon attack button - what's nice here is that if you don't want to expend your weapon ammo, you can just hit the enemy with the weapon instead. Using a rocket launcher as a club? Yes, please.

For an early Genesis game, Thunder Fox looks and sounds pretty decent. It's cutdown from the arcade version of course, but it still handles itself well. It's just too bad that a fair amount of content was cut. There is an entire stage missing, and vehicles can no longer be ridden, which does rob the Genesis port of some of the more distinctive features of the original.

Even though Thunder Fox is not what you'd call a "faithful" port, it still can provide a solid bit of entertainment. It won't last too long though - Thunder Fox is disappointingly easy and short, but it's good while it lasts.
