Ever wondered how you can make LEGO minifigures talk? Here's a behind the scenes video of how we did the mouth animation for our stop motion animated LEGO brickfilm "Old West Argument". This video features Phil Brown who lent his voice to the cowboy and the English guy and Stefan Minder who plays the Native American.

Here's a more detailed description of my process:
Recording the voices
Setting markers on the audio file for every wanted mouth position in Adobe Audition
Filming the LEGO minifigures without the mouth (and / or face) while using the recorded voices as a reference for movements.
Creating the mouth shapes in Adobe Illustrator as different layers
Importing the Illustrator layers into After Effects and set the correct mouth shape to the right position based on the markers put on the audio file.
Adding the mouth animation to the video of the LEGO minifigure.
Animating the movement of the mouth animation to the minifigure movement frame by frame.
Color correction to the mouth animation so it doesn't look out of place

This behind the scenes video was filmed with a NIKON D7200 and standard NIKKOR lense.

Apps and devices used for the brickfilm include:
Dragonframe on a Apple MacBook Pro for the animation.
Adobe After Effects for Visual Effects (mouth animation, compositing and color crading)
Adobe Premiere for editing.
Apple Logic Pro for sound effects and music

The music for the movie "Old West Argument" was composed, arranged and performed by Stefan Minder.

The music and sound effects for the movie "Old West Argument" were created using the following libraries:
"Hollywood Strings" by EastWest
"Hollywood Woodwinds" by EastWest
"Studio Box" by Best Service
