(14 Sep 2017) Syrian sappers are being trained in de-mining operations by the Russian military.
The Russian military opened a school for the training in February in Aleppo, which was relocated to the outskirts of Homs several months later.
Russian Colonel Anatoly Morozov, who heads the de-mining school, said the academy has trained about 600 sappers since February.
The school's graduates have taken part in de-mining efforts in Aleppo and Palmyra and should be deploying to the area around the eastern city of Deir el-Zour soon.
Fighting in Syria in recent weeks focused around this city on the Euphrates River, the last major city in hands of the Islamic State group.
President Bashar Assad's forces made considerable gains in the area in recent weeks, breaking a three-year long siege around the city.
