During Mary Kay Canada's 30th anniversary year --- our pearl year -- it's fitting that Mary Kay's unique Pearls of Sharing recruiting promotion played a part in new Independent National Sales Director Elena Sarmago's decision to start her Mary Kay business.

Elena first tried Mary Kay® product as part of a lunch-hour skin care class at the office where she worked as a secretary. As a newcomer to Canada from the Philippines, Elena longed to fulfill her dream of building a better future for her young family. So when a photo of Mary Kay Ash was revealed during the skin care class, Elena says it was love at first sight. "It was as if Mary Kay was looking straight at me, saying 'come and join us -- this is what you've been praying for!'"

Although Elena was eager to find out more about starting her own Mary Kay business, the Independent Beauty Consultant was focused on sharing the product, not the opportunity, overlooking Elena's interest. It wasn't until two months later -- during the Pearls of Sharing recruiting promotion -- that the Independent Beauty Consultant encouraged Elena to become a part of her team.

Despite an initial, if short-lived, bout with cold feet, Elena worked her business part-time, visiting other offices in the building where she worked and networking with other receptionists.

But it wasn't until she attended her first Independent Sales Director debut that Elena, inspired by the fine details of the ceremony -- the new Independent Sales Director taking the oath in her elegant suit and pink corsage --, caught the dream. And in October 1981, just a year after signing her Independent Beauty Consultant Agreement, Elena fulfilled her dream of becoming an Independent Sales Director.

Since then, Elena's long list of Mary Kay accomplishments reveals her dedication to achieving both personal and professional excellence. Not only is she the nation's 23rd Independent National Sales Director, she's also the first Asian woman to achieve the position in Canada, with one of the most diverse, multicultural and colourful National Areas in North America.

"Most of my National Area members -- just like me -- came to Canada as immigrants seeking a better way of life. More than 80% of my offspring Independent Sales Directors were not born here and I think that's part of why we all connect so well," says Elena, adding that she loves traveling and looks forward to building her National Area globally.

And to reward her National Area members for their commitment to sharing Mary Kay's dream, Elena still promotes her own version of the Pearls of Sharing recruiting program, honouring both her newest National Area members and their recruiter with a set of pearls.

"Pearls are such an important part of Mary Kay's culture," says Elena. "Every pearl is unique, just like every Independent Beauty Consultant is unique -- and that's especially true in my National Area."

With love, commitment and dedication to Mary Kay in her heart, Elena's sure to help countless other women grow into luminous pearls.
