Microsoft Excel is a detailed software that can be used as a multiple analysis tool. It gives simple options that can help you manage and manipulate data to derive desired or actual results. It is important to understand the workings of this software to be able to use it effectively. You can also use date calculation in Excel for marking the fiscal year or which quarter the date lies in. To learn how to calculate date in Excel, follow this step by step tutorial.

Step # 1 -- Calculate Fiscal year

To begin date calculations in Excel, list down a series of dates in Column B. In order to find out in which fiscal year does a particular date lie in, write

"=ROUNDUP(month(B2)/3,0)"

Now press Enter and you will get to know the fiscal year for that date. You can use the "Auto fill" function to fill in the rest of the cells in the column.

Step # 2 -- Assign Quarters

Another way to calculate date in Excel is based on the fact that the fiscal year starts in the month of October. For that we would have to restructure the formula a bit. Write,

"=CHOOSE(month(B2),2,2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4,1,1,1)"

Since January, February and March are in the second quarter according to our fiscal year, that's why we have written "two" for them and then "three" for April, May, June and so on.

Step # 3 -- Use Autofill option

Hit "Enter" to see the result and use the "Auto fill" option to fill in the rest of the cells in the column.
