The U.S. and Mexico created the Merida Initiative to fight rising narco trade and groups in the hope that Mexican gangsters could be defeated in Mexico sparing the U.S. from a growing onslaught of heroin, marijuana and cocaine transshipped from South America.

Lopez Obrador won the Mexican Presidency and immediately ended the war on narcos by calling for "hugs not bullets." He simply does not want to fight them. Result: record numbers of Mexicans have died; murder has reached numbers unimaginable under Presidents Fox and Calderon .

So as poverty. It had been lowered by Fox/Calderon and even PRI President Enrique Pena Nieto, lowered to 22%. Poverty skyrocketed under Lopez Obrador to a high currently of44%.

Mexico and the Biden Administration in the US have agreed to redo and rebrand the Merida Initiative to som ething High in the Sky baloney that will never occur and will be dropped by the next President who will take over on December 1, 2024.
