"The Way It Always Starts" was written by the Dire Straits guitarist and front-man Mark Knopfler and appeared on the soundtrack for the enduringly popular 1983 film, Local Hero. This debut soundtrack effort from Knopfler received a BAFTA award nomination for Best Score for a Film. Gerry Rafferty provides an unmistakable guest lead vocal on the track which features as a real highlight on the album, alongside the iconic instrumental album-closer, "Going Home".

The song encapsulates the overriding theme of the narrative, exploring the repetitive nature of life's struggles, the longing for a more peaceful existence, and the need to endure and adapt in challenging circumstances. Gerry's vocals provide the perfect partner for this melancholic gem.
