Several pictures of the moon were taken every 30 minutes in the night between April 7th and 8th, 2020 with a Nikon Coolpix P1000 at full zoom (3000 mm equivalent focal length). The pictures for every 30 minute-interval were histogram matched, stacked, and arranged in order to create a time lapse. Furthermore, the time lapse video has been deflickered with Ashampoo Video Deflicker and stabilized with Adobe Premiere Pro.
The moon was particularly close to earth during the time of observation (“Super moon”). The apparent size of the moon changes as the earth rotates and the distance between us and the moon varies.
The moon seems to rotate slightly since we look at different angles at the moon as earth rotates. This effect is called the “diurnal libration”.



From the change of the apparent size of the moon, it is actually possible to determine the lunar distance! With the data from this supermoon event, the geocentric lunar distance was determined to 55.58 earth radii, less than 0.5% of the actual value.
