Step 1 - Prepare the surface: Start by cleaning the furniture with a degreaser. This step is especially important because you don't want any grease or grim sanded down into your wood grain when you start to sand.

Step 2 - Determine the material of the furniture: Before choosing your grit size for sanding, check to see what material the furniture is made up of. Check out this guide on how to identify what material your furniture is made up of: https://www.studioadash.com/myblog/md...

Step 3 - Sand the furniture: Grab your orbital sander and remove the existing finish. If there is paint on the surface, I recommend using a chemical stripper before sanding. Once all of the finish is removed, take 220 grit sandpaper and hand sand in the direction of the grain. This will help eliminate any swirl marks caused by your orbital sander.

Step 4 - Apply the pre-stain conditioner: Clean the surface with a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris, and grab your pre-stain conditioner. The pre-stain conditioner is especially important with soft woods like pine or birch but can be used on any wood. It helps to eliminate the blotchiness caused by a penetrating stain, and makes your stain job look SO much better!

Unsure of what type of stain you have? If you are using a Minwax stain, the yellow can is an oil-based stain. If it is a water-based stain, most stain brands will have a blue label on the front indicating it is WATER BASED.

Step 5 - Apply the stain: Stir the stain thoroughly to ensure an even color. Use a brush, cloth, or sponge to apply the stain in the direction of the wood grain. Work in small sections and wipe off any excess stain with a clean cloth.

Step 6 - Allow the stain to penetrate: Let the stain sit on the furniture for the recommended amount of time specified on the product label. This allows the stain to penetrate the wood and achieve the desired color.

Step 7 - Wipe off excess stain: After the recommended time, use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess stain. Make sure to wipe in the direction of the wood grain to avoid streaks or unevenness.

Step 8 - Apply a topcoat: Once the stain is dry, you can apply a protective topcoat to seal and enhance the finish. This can be a clear varnish, polyurethane, or another type of sealant. My favorite type to use is Minwax's water based poly. I apply it with a brush or a sprayer and it goes on great.
Note: You can apply a water based poly over an oil based stain just ensure you give the stain time to dry! I typically wait at least 24 hours, but most of the time I wait 48 hours to ensure it is fully dry before applying the water based topcoat.

Step 9 - Allow the finish to cure: Give the furniture ample time to dry and cure before using or placing any objects on it. This can take anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the type of stain and topcoat used.
