BRASS FROM THE PAST: Very Rare 1930s Johann Sattler Top Action Rotary Valve (TARV) Bb Trumpet. Made in Graslitz, Czechoslovakia. Johann Sattler patented a trumpet with push-rods enclosed in metal tubes in Czechoslovakia in 1935. He also patented this invention in the USA in 1936. In his patent he claims that opening the valves only requires a very small movement of the plungers and therefore his invention permits quicker tone variations. I have found this to be true, although this design makes this horn rather awkward to hold. Notice also that this horn has a rimless bell. I have recently restored this horn.
Johann Sattler also made a similar model called the “Jazzmaster” which has blue and pearl valve tops and rotary caps and has extensive multi-colored Art Deco engravings. Obviously these horns were made to play Jazz which was at its high point in the 1930s. Listen to sounds from the past. About 90 years ago more or less. Spencer Williams: “Basin Street Blues”. Written in 1928, a few years before this horn was made.
