First Nations Research: The Salt Spring Archives and the Salt Spring Historical Society team up to work on a Heritage Canada project. Their inquiry adds to our knowledge about the lives of local Cowichan, Penelakut and Tsawout First Nations and their ancient connection to the islands of Salish Sea. The Hawaiians, Blacks and Japanese ethnic groups who settled on Salt Spring over a century ago, are also studied. Chris Arnett, Barb Lyngard, Gail and Frank Neumann, present their progress report, on February 9th, 2005 at Central Hall. They light up the screen with old photographs, maps, documents, family trees, artifacts and share interviews with local elders that recall Salt Spring Island's early days.

The featured photo was taken around 1900. It depicts Chief Charly and his wife. Their longhouse home, in background, was located at the Tsawout Reserve, at the head of Fulford Harbour.
