In this AWS + Rails series tutorial I walk you through the entire process of creating an AWS SES instance for sending emails from a Rails app. It’s important to note your new SES instance defaults to sandbox mode — which means you can only send to approved email addresses. I’ll guide you through the process of requesting removal from sandbox mode on your account.

The Amazon approval process is pretty simple, Amazon is just trying to ensure you are not sending out a bunch unwanted spam emails from Simple Email Service. The review process is manual, typically taking a few hours, but has taken as much as 48 hours for me. You can still test SES emailing in your Rails application while in Sandbox mode, you just wouldn’t want to deploy your Rails app to production while in sandbox as no one would receive Amazon SES emails.
