In his third bootlegged video appearance on this channel, Alex Rawlings, celebrated polyglot, talks in Berlin about the "need" basis, how learning seems to go much better when we perceive a need because we will be using the language, rather than trying to motivate ourselves to the long task of learning purely out of curiosity, heritage or cultural enrichment.

This is true, of course. It doesn't mean we should not learn in the absence of need, but the issue of need should figure in our long-term learning plans. We should be aware of the need to have additional motivation and the likelihood of falling out when there is no actual need.


At the same time resources are finite, at the moment that especially applies to time as we are not in the new world yet, and we simply have to focus on learing items or syllabuses which we are likely to need.

This is only an excerpt from a much longer talk, it gives a flavour of being in the Company of the great man.
